But then there are always the folk (probably people like us :-) that
like running weird and wonderful home networks with Asterisk boxes, etc.
who really don't want the all-singing/dancing DSL modem/router getting
in the way (too much).

Isn't yours? Most of our VoIP customers are using precisely that
kind of system. All the vendors have ADSL hardware with voice ports
built in these days.
