[AusNOG] Nbase-t - Multi-gig eth ports

Agreed, it’s a valid concern, those Pre-N devices were a mess.

With that said though, a lot of stuff like this does become standards anyway, Cisco are pretty good about giving up their ideas to be standards, the other competing one is apparently a much smaller “alliance” so I’d say this one will win out.

I think BGP was a cisco developed idea that became a standard? There are heaps of others though I can’t recall any right now.

At least this is developed by a group rather than just Cisco, so there is that, though as always, YMMV ☺

Thanks,

I wonder if this will be like when 802.11n first came out. All of the "Pre-N" devices that came out that would only work with devices from the same manufacturer.

This line worries me:
Q.Is Cisco multigigabit technology a standard yet?
A.Cisco multigigabit technology is based on the NBase-T technology, and is not yet an industry standard.
However, Cisco is collaborating with industry partners to work toward an industry standard
Knowing cisco.. "We'll do it our way, your loss if you don't follow"

Hey guys,

Apologies if this has already gone around, but I hadn’t seen it yet.

For those that are interested, Cisco has launched its Nbase-T gear (multi-gig eth), including 4500-E gear, 3850’s, 3560cx’s and a 6500 line card.

For those about to upgrade gear (as we are) it’s a good consideration with AC Wave 2 coming (ETA TBD though) and gear starting to demand more than a 1gb port can offer, plus you can use it over older cabling (assuming cabling quality is up to scratch etc.)

All up, pretty interesting, even if it’s a stop gap measure in the long run.

Cisco’s FAQ on N-base:

There is tonnes more info out there and I believe there is a competing product that does a similar thing.
