[AusNOG] Femtocells

This issue of what happens when the lights go out is something that i have been thinking about, but at the end of the day, it would be on a UPS which would give me about 15 minutes worth, and failing that i would need to go stand on a footpath to make a call back to the base tower, its not that my reception is non-existant, its more painful to stand in the rain to make a call ;)

Also some more information i have managed to pry from optus today:
If you are not in the area's mentioned but are interested, go to one of the mentioned stores and pick one up, no technical reason why it wont work.
The national rollout date for these devices is the start of may 2011.

VF nz are now selling them commercially. But only to customers on it's fixed line bb service. The data is unmetered.

It's an interesting topic, "If you want great coverage for your mobile then you have to buy your bb from us as well"....

...but as MMC says, what happens when the lights go out and your fixed bb dies and your carrier has long since stopped providing enough service in the area to carry the network load in a disaster (not that I would know much about disasters living in chch!)

Lot's more info on VF.nz here - http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=40&topicid=77291

Some discussion is also going on about the back up battery issue here:

With a move to naked dsl or FTTH on a large scale, this issue is now getting more and more focus as you could end up with a whole city without any comms after 8 hours.
