I think one of the major issues which you may come across is the reluctance, from a PR standpoint, for a company to oppose the filter in the public arena. iiNet are the only major provider which I am aware that have done so (however I may be wrong here), other than that it seems to be people working independently.

Unfortunately, I'm aware of at least one provider which notified their staff that they were NOT to comment on the filtering situation in the public arena -- fearing that it may come back as the companies opinion on the situation -- even to the point of trying to prevent their staff from voicing their opinion on social networking sites.

It seems that some providers would rather the issue be fought for them, rather than taking hold of the situation.

its been pretty clear what Google position all along. Why else do you think Conroy has it in for Google.

The problem is that not enough 'outcry' from the industry is there, so Conroy is free to say he's got the support of the industry, with a possibly few big players in his back pocket due to NBN, he can say things such as 'industry consultation/support' etc.

How many Telco/ISP are there in Australia, and how many would decree publicly they do not support filtering/censorship?

If we get a big enough list, that will immediately be media worthy, so every time it is mentioned in the press, we have a hard stat on how many of the ISP/Telcos actually support this scheme. Yes Conroy will dismiss it, but its yet another salvo. <insert reputable organisation to represent us>.

Until we get an industry group together, I'm happy to collate that information, so if your organisation is willing to join the list (at the moment, its just a list opposing the filter). Please send me a private message so I can gather the details.

We know Google is against filtering... but are they willing to come out if heavy support and promotion of this fight ? They do have the media's ear.

I think the first thing we need to do is organise ourselves, either working with existing efforts (preference) or forming our own small working groups.

To this end, i'm thinking about hosting a gathering next Wednesday evening in Sydney to strategize our next steps.

If your keen, please contact me off-list.

So the obvious question(s) not being asked include:

(1) Will there be a piece/feature/segment in The Program for AusNOG04 regarding -> The Impending Censorship Program and What Can/Are/Will We , As An Industry, Do About It?
(2) Will many-and-various media-presences be requested to record the proceedings (and, ideally, report on such)

And yes, (1) is obviously and clearly a Network Operations issue.

If we do or at least *achieve* nothing, then it will have significant operational consequences amounting to non-trivial financial impact.
