It's partly also due to design decisions in the mailing list software,
and to some extent MUA software.
If the list didn't munge the Subject header (inserting "[AusNOG]") and
put a footer under your message with the list details, then the DKIM
signature would remain correct, and therefore DMARC would be OK.
If mail clients did a better job of telling us about stuff that's in the
List-* headers, we might not feel the need to munge the Subject and Body
to insert details about the list.
