[AusNOG] Off Topic - Brisbane recruitment recommendations

Hi
I've been working in IT for over eleven years(Global Satellite Comms &
Networking and general IT).
About 5 years ago I decided to formalize my knowledge(did it all
backwards!) and headed off to Uni(off campus) as an 'undergraduate'.
Next month(Age 41 !) if all goes well, I walk out with a Bachelor of
Information Technology 'Cloud computing' degree(Deakin Uni).
That said I'll be one of the 1st of a bunch of uni students who have
such a degree title as that major is relatively new in the higher
education sector. So I would imaging that in a few years there should be
a flood of people with similar degrees&majors to help fill the current void.
Anyhow the crux of the point I wish to make, is how many of you in the
network industry work and speak with your local big Universities and
talk to them about real world current/upcoming skill set requirements
and to help tailor the education of upcoming IT students that do ooze
out of the system, so they have the basics all sorted out,
mitigating(obviously to a point) problems described below? e.g In the
main cloud computing subject, we did a lot of work on Amazon/EC2
concepts and how it all bolts together, but did little to nothing on
SDN/Azure and general cloud management software, but I felt we could
have fitted more useful topics in..
Most students who do study degree's in IT, are also required to
now-a-days complete an internship in the last year of their degree,
usually for several weeks/months. They are not necessarily paid intern
positions, students also often have to go find there own
placement(research employers, and directly inquire and hope theirs
something available). That said, if this industry is looking to bolster
its numbers and overall skills/experiences, it would not hurt to send
some of those entry level cloud/network job ad's or intern positions you
have to your local university(most uni's have job shop/intern areas that
work with current students to help them move into the workforce or get a
mandatory internship.) that offers courses that your business
specializes in, and gives those students who are nearing the end of
there degree, 1. get a foot in the door(even if its just a internship),
2. If it is in intern position and you like there skills & attitude you
can always offer employment at the end of their term with you and train
them in the finer detail of the dark arts !!.
Cheers
Greg
