[AusNOG] (Meta)data retention...

I was at a family gathering last weekend and raised the topic of metadata and explained what it was and that the govt would be mandating the collection & storage of it for two years with access by law enforcement and handful of other govt agencies.
There were 8 adults present, representing a fairly broad range of occupations (Nurse, Electrician, Teacher, Accountant, Electrical Engineer, stay at home mum, Nanna & myself) and a decent range of ages (about 25-60).
The general consensus was that they weren't worried about it and most in fact assumed this data was already kept and available to those who wanted it. There was also the general opinion that "I'm not breaking the law or have anything to hide, so go for it" and "if it helps stop the criminals then it's for the greater good".
Both of the major political parties support the legislation, so the threat of the ruling party getting voted out over this issue doesn't exist.
I am indeed left thinking that nobody outside of the SP community knows or cares about it that much.

This industry has not changed or learned much in ~20 years.:Darren
