*I think a better demonstration would be to have many people use the
Freedom of Information Act to request government metatdata.*
The best demonstration is that Turnbull, the Communications Minister, is
using an encryption app that defeats data retention. Beyond parody.

At which point, even the government must concede that data retention is
doomed to be an expensive waste of time and $600M. At this point, even if
the bill passes, at some point clearer heads will prevail, and the bill
will be repealed or watered down. I'd be perfectly content with mandatory
logging of MAC and (source) IP alllocation of end users, with access
restricted to the security agencies and the prosecution of serious crimes.
I'd think this fair and sensible, emulates the current logging of phone
numbers, and would provide the requisite evidentiary trail to assist in
prosecutions.
