Please note that WAN optimizers these days don't do only compression.

The technique they use is data reduction, which is the learning of the 
data (which often indeed gets transferred compressed) and next time when 
the same data comes by it will send a reference only.

For example, you send via SMTP a 10 page text-file to your co-worker in 
the next room. During the sending of the email the WAN optimizers learn 
the data (thus the whole contents of the email goes over the wire), 
during the retrieval of the email from the POP3 server the WAN 
optimizers have already seen the data (and thus only references go over 
the wire).
