[AusNOG] [v6z] Why you shouldn't worry about switching to IPv6 now

Sorry to disagree, especially with /B… but 'how things should be' and 'how they really are' are two different things.

I don't actually believe end-users should have to pay for this… sure, they can deal with the cost for their new router, but being frank here, the situation most ISPs are in with regard to IPv6 are in it due to their own lack of action. The only one who has any reasonable clue in this country is Internode who have gone out hard in R&D, have an actual service and pushed it to the marketplace. If they get many new users because they are fully 'IPv6' capable, then they deserve it.

As of 5am this morning APNIC ran out of IPv4 Addresses. This is now the end. Will anything dramatically happen today? No. Next week? No… in 6 months… well, if you have enough v4, or LSN/CGN, then no.

Do consumers have to worry about anything at the moment? No. It wouldn't matter if every end user in the country ran out and purchased a v6 compatible CPE… it still wouldn't accelerate the deployment of ISPs v6 infrastructure.

v4 will be around for years… especially in the networks behind the routers and over VPN's and so on. The best thing that the runout of v4 will cause, is that vendors will make sure their devices have v6 stacks in them… because pretty soon, people will stop buying 'v4-only' devices.

The normal IT equipment cycle of 3-4 years will get rid of 90% of v4-only kit, with small businesses keeping equipment much longer.

But then technologies will come along on the routers that allow some sort of NAT-PT where there is a port for v4 devices… and some devices will happily exist for 10 years or more.

Don't like it? Nor do I… but it is how this will play out.

I just think we need to move our ass and make sure we're all ready for when they are…. Way before they are.

Its plain scarey that this article got published and further that some of you think it's all the isp's problem. But typical of SME and SME minded people, they think its always someone else's problem and never there's and they shouldn't have to pay for it.

At the end of the day this article is just trolling. From an SME point of view it should be on technology list when upgrading key equipment even if you don't use it now.

Think /b has this covered.. Obvious troll is obvious.

Thank you Scott.

I was sitting here, having just read the article thinking 'umm, what is wrong with what he is saying' especially for consumers and small business.

But the entire list seemed to be upset and I wasn't wanting to start Friday with being flamed…. But since you brought it up, I will support you.

>From the perspective of those end-users that "don’t know the difference" I don't see a problem with this article in that while we don’t like what it says, it seems to be entirely appropriate and accurate.

Also, I am assuming the article was written in response to the thousands of 'end of the world' articles about v6 and that we all have to move… NOW.

If you know me, you will know that I am a massive supporter of IPv6, given talks on it all over the region and my company is probably the largest 'external' (doing it for other peoples networks) integrators of IPv6 in this country (and others)… but reality is reality and this article is just speaking the truth, no matter how much we may not like to hear it.
