[AusNOG] No Optus mobile broadband in Darwin

I still reckon you are better off on Telstra until a decent player comes
along with their own backhaul.
All our NT traffic goes via Adelaide then across to Sydney or down to
Melbourne for replication.
There is local talk about Nextgen here and even Amcom (they are putting
in new kit for the Education contract), but terrain challenges getting
gear and cables across large areas of "nothingness" are going to be
tough.
Cheers ;)

tell customers "no Optus mobile broadband here"?"
Probably because the backhaul to SA/QLD (being as old as they are,
there's a strong chance Optus may take the aging Darwin -> Isa ->
Townsville route on Telstra's ATM network) is saturated to the hilt.
$1k/Mbps and beyond for carriage to Darwin, is it any wonder?
Curtis.

Hey Darren,
Yeah the Optus shop on Knuckey St is where I went yesterday at lunch
time and was told "it's not available anymore and we don't have any
indications when it will be back....but if you want you can order Optus
based mobile through someone in another state, get them to send up the
modem and then just hope like hell that the congestion doesn't hit too
hard during peak and effectively be as slow as dial-up."
I was at a smaller Optus shop in Casuarina the other day who also gave
me "we have no mobile broadband here", I thought maybe the shop in the
city might have a bit more information about why there's no mobile
broadband.
My logic suggests if Optus mobile reception is available, how is the
mobile broadband service any different that Optus tell their staff to
tell customers "no Optus mobile broadband here"?
Cheers
Kai

Hi Kai,
I am here in Darwin this week and just saw a bus shelter style
advertisement for Optus Mobile Broadband ;)
There is also an Optus business centre (shop) on Knuckey Street you
could try.
Cheers.

Thanks for all the responses, very much appreciated and I'll keep an eye
on it.
Would very much like to hear something from an Optus rep about their
plans.
Cheers

They do indeed - we use it in Darwin and Alice Springs. Telstra backhaul
though...

And for business/enterprise customers I heard on the grape vine amcom
has a large fibre network in the CBD of Darwin (just no cheap backhaul).

On the broadband front, why do you think that Nextgen got the 'Black
Spot' contract to run fibre up to Darwin (and lots of other places)?
BTW, this is well underway.
