G'day folks.

APNIC allows bulk download access to WHOIS to more than 400 orgs. Some (like he.net <https://bgp.he.net/AS138041#_whois>) republish that data online. At least one bulk consumer and very likely many third parties have taken advantage of APNIC WHOIS data to spam network operators.

*prop-162-v001: WHOIS Privacy* in discussion in the APNIC Policy SIG proposes that APNIC remove address, phone, fax-no, e-mail, and notify fields from Org, IRT, abuse-c and role objects from the dataset distributed to bulk consumers. It also proposes APNIC require existing re-publishers of that information to take it offline.

All contact detail will still be available via APNIC's website and WHOIS - services that are secure and rate limited.

I'm looking for comment and refinement of the proposal and have made a Google Doc available for that https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pdwo9L8cAhrew8s95j5fSw7r1L0kvpYUlMHjK3RHOKk/edit?usp=sharing

If you have data in the WHOIS and support the proposal, I'd appreciate your permission to tell the Policy-SIG list that you or your organisation are behind it.

Thanks,

Jon
