[AusNOG] Zoom Broadband another Epic broadband in the making

Hi Basically this Zoom Broadband business has a lot of moving parts from what I can tell, business registration details are a bit of a mess.
They just need to tidy up the domain registration details I think.
As for this Jake fellow not totally sure what his involvement actually is, but it looks like a very young and rather green business.
I mean green as in unexperienced in this case.
I could spend all day on this but I’ve got a business of my own to run.
As for Vocus nothing wrong with them overall, if their was Commonwealth Bank wouldn’t be dealing with them. You need to separate the sales team and the accounts team as I said in the Ozbargain thread they don’t care about you or your business your just a number to these huge corporations.
That doesn’t mean they don’t want your business or to assist you , it just means that shareholders come first.
You need to take that into consideration and come up with payment plans if things are tight.
Making up stories like some of the employees of Zoom Broadband have done just makes them look stupid I don’t believe any of the BS.
I wish the Zoom Broadband guys and girls luck but I don’t like their chances of succeeding with the way things are going.
That burn rate is just too high according to what they have written they will make a loss of $1.5 million dollars. You need to be the size of Commbank to sustain those types of loss.

I will watch with interest particularly with some of the people involved in the business.

Looking at the ABR entry for Zoom Broadband Pty Ltd, the business name "Zoom Broadband" was registered on 04 November 2022, a little over a month ago.

https://abr.business.gov.au/ABN/View?id=663007949

I'm all for roasting a business if there's reason to do so (which is clearly the case here) and not to play the role of devil's advocate, however if we rely on information when doing so we need to fact-check against reliable sources otherwise we'll look like the silly ones with egg on our faces, and they'll be laughing at us.

You don't want to go down that road.

Furthermore, if Zoom.us (the video conferencing organisation) does indeed have a trademark on the word "Zoom" they'll already know about Zoom Broadband.

Hi As I understand it the documents in question are legal templates written by a law firm in Sydney.
But its pretty slack on their part at Zoom Broadband not to update the contact details and the names to reflect their own operation.
That said they haven’t even registered the business name or the company name Zoom broadband, probably wouldn’t be allowed to either as it’s a breach of Zoom’s trademark as they operate in the same sector.
Regards Chad.

Not to play devil's advocate here, I think we may have got the whole "stole the document" thing wrong. If you look at the CTC doc on page 34, it lists the address of NBNco and Telstra, with Optus' name at the bottom of 34 and the Lyonpark Road address starting on page 35. Not to detract from other bad things though.

Thanks for re-posting this, I was only being polite to these guys on Ozbargain so I didn’t get in trouble with the mods for breaching some kind of guideline but the entire things now looks like a scam.

I am surprised the wholesale provider didn’t do more background checks on the provider before on boarding them.

They are going to get burnt.

I also alerted member services at the TIO about this operation as well.

I also think the development team at Wordpress need their heads read for allowing this type of garbage code to be released into the wild.

I mean I actually quite like Wordpress but some of the plugins are complete junk.

There is something extremely concerning about Zoom Broadband.

If you are already a customer, run away. It's also probably advisable to cancel the card you signed up with, ASAP.

The great thing about these no-code development frameworks (like they use) is that a lot of the data is stored in your browser. As a matter of fact, I don't believe any requests are actually being done by the server – it's all client side.

What does that mean?

In the Javascript that runs the website (available to *anyone* that visits the website), you can see:
– The Stripe Live Secret Key (this is called SECRET for a reason – anyone with access to that key can create a charge/refund to your card, and see ALL transactions)
– The Username and Password for AWS Cognito (where SECRETS are stored)
– FSG API endpoints and secrets allowing all service information to be viewed, and services to be modified
– What is (possibly) Mr Berry's mobile number as a test case for sending SMS
– Secrets to access the Radius server
– Quite likely full access to any personal information you've given to them

And what is most interesting, for a company that claims to have nothing to do with Jake Berry, is a test account – jberry at hypernet.com.au<mailto:jberry at hypernet.com.au> – what a strange coincidence

Yeah I get that.

Bit concerned they’ve only invested $300000 which is nothing for an ISP. You need $10000000 at least just to get something half decent in terms of network.

You need a few more million for marketing on top of that.

This is why it works for the likes of Australia post as they already have a captive audience to sell to and they’ve gone layer 3 so not much investment required layer 2 you need millions to do it properly.

This is why I went for the business side of the market partly because we were already a business to business provider but the margins on business broadband are so much better than residential.

Hi

Just to clarify it wasn’t so much the plans pricing that was concerning me, but more the lack of margin.

$3 per customer isn’t a lot for things like support and monitoring etc, as I understand it the lower NBN plans you should be making around $7 to $10 per customer and the higher ones $20 plus.

End of the day its up to each provider to make their own decisions on margins etc I think it will be interesting to see how they go anyway.

Their retail prices are almost identical to ours, I think they’re pretty reasonable especially if they’re an RSP.

Hi All .

Came across this new provider on Whingepool (whirlpool) while doing some casual browsing www.zoombroadband.com.au<http://www.zoombroadband.com.au> .

Pricing looks very much unsustainable and the business model horrifies me.

Plus this post on Ozbargain https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/739835?page=4#comment

Look at page 5.

Now I know the margins on NBN aren’t fantastic but $3 I wouldn’t even waste time with.

I mean I don’t want to discourage new players from entering the market and giving it a crack but I think you at least need to be able to walk before you can run.

Also you need to comply with the TIO requirements and the Comms alliance for ISPs. As in the codes of conduct.

Regards Chad.
