[AusNOG] Cisco 10Gb switches

We run the 3850 12X48U’s here (12 Mgig ports, 48 total, with UPOE on them) and the mgig is good, it will run 10gb no problem. They do make a 24 port model as well.

Just keep in mind your uplink might be a problem there as the SFP+ uplinks are limited (2 normally, I’m not sure if you can get 4x10gb SFP+ uplink modules for them, I think so but they won’t be as cheap)

There are also some other caveats worth mentioning, port channels will come up across mgig links, but do not like links with different speeds, so if your copper is long / low quality that is definitely something to watch for, if a single link goes to a different speed the entire bundle will fall apart.

I believe that was being worked on, but I’m not sure if a fix was found / implemented yet, but it’ll only matter if you have long links / bad copper.

Cheers,
Ayden

Actually if you want to see the full range of devices featuring “multigigabit”, check out here:
https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/solutions/enterprise-networks/catalyst-multigigabit-switching/<http://antispam.csu.edu.au:32224/?dmVyPTEuMDAxJiZjODk1Y2I2ODU0N2Q0MTBlMj01QzY2NDI0OF8xMTMzMF85ODA0XzEmJjcxNDZjOGMyNGUxM2JjNz0xMzMzJiZ1cmw9aHR0cHMlM0ElMkYlMkZ3d3clMkVjaXNjbyUyRWNvbSUyRmMlMkZlbiUyRnVzJTJGc29sdXRpb25zJTJGZW50ZXJwcmlzZS1uZXR3b3JrcyUyRmNhdGFseXN0LW11bHRpZ2lnYWJpdC1zd2l0Y2hpbmclMkY=>

Some only have a handful of 10G ports for uplinks, not designed for edge ports.

Several of the Cisco 3850 series have 10G copper ports.

Hi,

My google fu is failing me. Does anyone have any recommendations for Cisco 10Gb switches? They must have 10Gb over Cat6 (not my decision) and run some variant of ios. The uplinks can be SFP+. They only need 16 ports.

Thanks.
