[AusNOG] .AU Dns Issue?

I'm a bit surprised that there isn't more traffic here about this.
The disappearance of .au is supposed to be unthinkable, and yet it was apparently pretty widespread.
This probably isn't the right forum for it, but I hope there's a proper investigation into what went wrong. It's hard to think of many failures that are more fundamental to the utility of the Internet than the arbitrary disappearance of TLDs.
Does anyone definitively know what happened?
