Based on the flood of private emails our attempt to reduce the noise on the list was welcomed by the list members.  However, it's generated noise in response.  Shame.

If the email was promoting IAA membership, with a bullet point as generic as "* special offers from industry suppliers" then I think it would have been OK.

Where this crossed the line was it was an advertisement for a single business for members of a particular group of whom some listen here.

If you've been around the Internet long enough, you can also smell astroturfing-like advertising such as posting subtle marketing to a much larger audience than appropriate.

That can do more damage to the brand than intended. I've bought stuff from the vendor mentioned in the past, I might not in the future, just because of this single "innocent" email.
