[AusNOG] Synology bulk replace characters

Hi all,

We tend to replace Apple servers with a Synology NAS and proceed to
overhaul their networking equipment, etc, to ensure we have a reliable
and fit-for-purpose environment to manage.

This time around we've a client who seems to have BOMs (Byte Order
Marks) in their file names post-migration, courtesy of either Apple or
an environment change. Renames to remove the suspect characters can
occur in DSM however via SSH it fails to rename files in any of our
usual bash scripts as once it has found one of the many illegal files,
it cannot rename as the file of course does not exist (given it contains
illegal characters).

Our most recent two Mac Server to Synology conversions have both been
architects so colons in folders are expected, these can be replaced with
ease in a simple find command. However, this BOM style issue seems to be
presenting a far more vast hurdle for us.

There are a large number of files so manual renaming is highly
undesirable, especially from the client's standpoint for our time.

Has anyone had a similar experience and, if so, what was the workaround?

With thanks and regards,
