Why? It should have happened years ago.

The DNS system, in its current form means that 2LD are meaningless.

Tell me how .com.au .net.au .org.au or the "never had a point" .asn.au -
are even relevant anymore?

We've had multiple direct registrations in .nz for a while now, not to
mentions .sg .cn and many others.

The old notion of 2LD's is dead.. move on, nothing to see here.
