I've heard encrypted calls can be an issue on virtual infrastructure, I'd be interested to hear any experiences with secure sip calls if anybody has any...

There is a optional proxy server which handles transcoding where needed.

So yes transcoding is on the server, but Asterisk should be using ulaw internally for everything (i think).

I've recently set up an Asterisk server on AWS just for some testing of some things but I'm generally impressed.

My setup is FreePBX/Ubuntu 14/Asterisk 12 on a t2.micro instance.

There is no appreciable lag or any issues with voice performance for 2-3 calls at once.

This isn't a final setup, just for testing and I'd probably go for guaranteed resources (not a t2) for the final setup.
It is doing the job without any struggles at all however.
