[AusNOG] Jobs - degree vs experience?

I've worked for three different places at once when I worked as a pilot (fixed wing) and doing two other casual jobs to pay the bills.
It sucked, waaaay too difficult to manage but I guess that's each to their own
I am in Brisbane, my current temporary-full time employment contract concludes on March 28th, my employer knows I'm seeking further opportunities.
After some personal brainstorming the most practical thing to do is find full-time ongoing employment. I've applied for a job each week for the last three months, with no luck. I have 14 years experience which is an experience equivalent to a degree + extras but it looks like employers are looking for the word "Degree" on my CV, and I don't have that, so I'm going to see what's required to get a degree with RPL with the intention of making myself "more hirable".
My professional background in the last 14 years is Sys Admin + Desktop Support + Training and Mentoring, and four years in fixed wing aviation.
My general background is IT, Aviation, Maritime and Marine, Politics, Customer Relations and Training/Tutoring. I've been working in education related employment for my professional career, either being a Sys Admin in schools/TAFE/Uni etc or mentoring and tutoring students in aviation and meteorology.
Time away from home is no problem, I've done extended road/air trips for systems and network maintenance/upgrades.
I live close to Brisbane airport and am happy to travel if required.
In the end I'm looking for long term employment to develop on a personal and professional basis and provide stability to myself and my employer.

This is an excellent conversation, for employers to know and
consider, and to engineers know that there are options out there.
Something I'd also recommend to some engineers... consider
timesharing... I.e. working part time for two or three people - at
normalish wages, not contracting hourly wages... a good way to create
yourself a fulltime job. Just don't over-contend yourself, and make
sure the engagement with your employers is clear (priorities, etc).
I'd seriously consider a part-time person in some other locations in
Australia, if I wasn't going to be paying contractor rates.
Btw... I'm not trying to get 'cheap' people, I am just saying that
most employers don't want to pay contractor rates on a long term
basis.
I also employ one guy on a 40 hours per month basis.. he isn't
required for operational work much, and just has a list of tasks to
do, and I pay a normal - about a quarter of a full-time person.

I Also Agree
I am more than happy to either work from home, Or work from the
datacentre for any business/company who is interstate that may have
an
operation in place in Melbourne, I also wouldn’t charge an arm and
4
legs, as im still a “youngin” as they call it :D

I'm using the above email to ask a question,
but it's not directed at any person, rather
at the group of folks that posted looking for
network engineers.
Why not consider telecommuters? Once looking
locally has not found anyone that can fill the
position why not look at folks from other
countries?
