[AusNOG] NBN FTTN And Migrations and End User Equipment

Certification applies to the access seeker, not the CPE. If you choose to initially certify 1 CPE you do not need to recertify when you want to introduce a new CPE to the mix. If you want to use NBN's VDSL modems from their lab for your certification and then use a tin can and string in the real world, that's up to you. Repeat after me. The CPE is not under certification, the access seeker is.

This is great if the entity ordering the AVC is the entity that was certified at NBN's facility. The disconnect comes when the "access seeker" that was certified by NBN for FTTN in the lab (Eg a wholesaler) is not the entity that is ultimately driving the order or providing the EU with a CPE (Eg downstream RSP ) . In this scenario communication as to what CPEs would be supported is essential.

VDSL modem's need to be certified and from what I've heard from NBN and the trials, each ISP is required to test and prove the VDSL modem they intend on supply so I don't think this is going to be a case of 'Buy the modem that is right for the job'.

I've even heard of the MSAN shutting down the VDSL port based on MAC address during the trial if you tried to use a non Telstra supplied CPE.

I don't know all your questions answers but I have heard that VDSL will not have an NTD, I.e. it will be standard 'phone line' hand off.

It's also important to note that nbn will require vectoring so make sure the cpe you buy / tell your customers to buy supports it, no vectoring no connection.

I heard this from an nbnco employee in a semi anonymous format so I'm not sure if this is backed up by public documents.

Hey Guy

I have been wondering?

How are NBN going to migrate users from a current working ADSL and phone to the FTTN NBN

EG. I have a Telstra phone and working Bigpond ADSL.

Now NBN FTTN comes along. Now I assume NBN are building the Nodes in areas where lots of phone lines converge and meet up EG Street Ends and intersections etc.

Will NBN just leave my phone line connected to the Exchange and when I request to be migrated will they basically chop my line at the cabinet and plug me into the cabinet.

What will happen to the dial tone in that instance. Will it be provided from the cabinet or will it still come from the exchange.

Also what will happen at the end users house. Will they have an NTD or will they just need a VDSL2 modem. Any ideas what VDSL2 modems are on the market?

Thanks
