There are elements of this story which are 100% legitimate but some are cringeworthy.
You can indeed do what they are saying, this is nothing new at all due to flaws in the GSM protocol. Old news!

I watched this show too, it was really interesting, thoroughly recommend watching it if you haven't, they were able to see SMS's, location data, and who knows what else from the other side of the world, they said they could do it on any phone and any network.
