[AusNOG] routeros v Vyatta

Alex,

Vyatta would tick all of those boxes for you in the Community edition, the only thing RouterOS has on Vyatta functionality wise is really MPLS/VPLS and a few other minor protocol support wins. Web GUI wise and Winbox/Dude wise Vyatta does not come close to touching the sides BUT throughput wise, as you can use VMXNet I've pushed 1.5-2.0 GBit's without any jitter or packet loss.

Vyatta for the core and RouterOS for the edge if you're going to stay in software, that's my proven suggestion.

Subject: [AusNOG] routeros v Vyatta

Hi

Been using routerOS for nearly 6 months, like the interface and cost :)

But I am now running into limitation in routing speed, I can't seem to push them past 1Gb/s running them on ESX 5.5 with the e1000 driver, I am looking into trying the e1000e driver there is some hope I might be able to get more than 1G.

So I come back to the list to find out if people have been using Vyatta and how they find it. How does it compare to routerOS.

Key features I am looking at

OSPF
BGP ... including filtering etc etc
Firewall
Routing

Alex
