Their controller software can be run on their NVR appliances, which are
a few hundred dollars, and run debian, IIRC.
The controller software also doesn't need to be local, and the APs can
continue operating without access to the controller, although some
functions, such as captive portals will cease to work while the
controller's unreachable.
I quite like the Ubiquiti gear, although the controller and radios
certainly don't have the same number of features and level of control as
some of the more established players.
