Hey Skeeve,

I suppose, given the amount of technical discussions explaining how it is possible, it logically leads on to instead being influence by internal decisions (or political) not to offer from day dot.

To me, looking at the rollout plan it seems NBN Co will be using 'residential' products as a somewhat pilot to bed down practises, operations and prove their initial assumptions.

The roadmap leads and builds upon, higher AVC speeds, better TC's, increased SLAs, improved OAM. These all lead to services more suited for business and eventually enterprise.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with this approach, rather responding how I came to the conclusion of 'why' by looking at the 'when'.

Seems they may be following a somewhat tried and tested (if not dated) waterfall model of delivery or(/and) perhaps on boarding hundreds of thousands of residential services may be enough to chew off initially :)

My 2 cents anyway.

Hey Chris,

I wasn't asked 'when' they were doing it, but more 'why' they aren't doing it from day dot on the speeds they've chosen, which from what I understand, the GPON being rolled out is fully capable of.

Hey all,

I am sure this will spurn a healthy discussion... perhaps with conflicting views...

But I was wondering the other day 'Why aren't NBNCo tails sold as symmetric speeds?'

Considering:

- The transit the RSP buys is symmetric (nearly always)
- The network core of the RSP is symmetric
- The handoff to either NBNCo or an aggregator (and then NBNCo) is pretty much always symmetric
- The PoI's core is symmetric
- The fibre to the home is symmetric capable
- The NTU is just ethernet - symmetric
- Anything they plug into the NTU is symmetrical - ethernet

Google Fibre in the US is 1G/1G in speeds...

So... unless I am missing something obvious (always possible)... Why are NBNCo tails not sold as symmetrical speeds?

I am not sure why there is this artificial design in these products to make them asymmetric.  There doesn't seem to be any gain by doing this that I can think of.

Gone are the days of DSL like speeds and unbalanced design... even ATM was symmetrical.

Keen for peoples opinions.
