That's excellent Shara. Really appreciate it. Will provide some feedback
directly.

Cheers

Subject: Re: [AusNOG] Dark Fibre Pricing

Hi Bevan,

I'm collecting data in support of an ongoing project to benchmark dark fibre
pricing. The results are used for a variety of purposes such as:
* asset valuation
* business cases
* price models (for example DF and wholesale ethernet prices are a part of
my NBN Co bandwidth and price scenario model
http://www.marketclarity.com.au/products/nbn-research/market-clarity-nbn-ban
dwidth-and-price-scenario-model-2/)
* customer projects
* published price benchmark research

Insight into the nature of any given contract is interesting in terms of
understanding industry dynamics, but commercially sensitive specifics are
not required. I do, however, need to know the length of the fibre run so
that the data can be analysed.

Although I certainly recognise that some routes (such as between DCs or
other high traffic routes) would attract special pricing - and that
underlying fibre build costs are definitely location dependent, I'm not
trying to segment DF pricing by specific location (mainly due to
insufficient data points, and commercial sensitivity about specific
contracts).

There are numerous fibre owners that have infrastructure spanning > 15 Km
(my request), and whilst there are only a few telco industry fibre owners
that sell long haul fibre, there are other non-telco fibre owners that make
assets available to third parties.

My reporting is done on the basis of industry low, median and high $/Km
prices for different distance bands such as "Distance greater than 15 Km and
up to and including 30 Km" which would make it very difficult (if not
impossible) to backward engineer an industry low, median or high price to
any specific provider.

This type of research is very time consuming, and as such I can't freely
release information into the public domain, but I'm happy to provide
like-for-like feedback to anyone who is able to assist. Generally, I do this
in a conversation so that we can also discuss related trends.

Cheers,
Shara
