Hi NZNOG Community,
Recently, individuals claiming to represent APNIC have contacted
some Members, requesting to speak to senior staff regarding non-
APNIC matters. This is fraudulent behaviour and of concern as
address holders may be convinced to provide details that might
facilitate hijacking of registration database records, through
theft of authentication or personal identity in formation.
In order to avoid any negative consequences from scammers, APNIC
Members and the wider community are reminded of the following:
1. APNIC staff do not make unsolicited calls or emails to individuals
not listed as admin or technical contacts in the whois database.
2. APNIC staff will never request any login or password details.
APNIC takes the security of Member information very seriously, and
has established procedures in place to protect and maintain the
confidentiality and non-disclosure of such information.
Public information such as contact details is available in the
APNIC Whois Database, and where there is a case of any registry
records being corrupted or altered without authorization, APNIC
will be able to restore the correct information based on master
records.
If you have been contacted and fear information has been lost or
provided inadvertently to a scammer, or if you have any concerns
regarding an email or voice call from someone claiming to represent
APNIC, please contact the APNIC Helpdesk immediately to resolve that
issue and verify the staff member's identity. APNIC staff are trained
to expect this and encourage you to do so, to ensure that both private
and public records stay safe.
Of course, any information that can be obtained about this scam would
be gratefully received by APNIC.
If you have any questions or concerns, or would like to talk with one
of our Helpdesk staff, please contact helpdesk at apnic.net.
Kind regards,
Elly
APNIC
