[AusNOG] NextDC M1 - Out of band transit needed

Dear All

The biggest issue within M1 for a copper service would be the cross connection charge, its $150.00 per month for a copper cross connection.

However if you arrange an out of band service with a carrier who also has their own cable license into the MMR room then your only looking at $75.00 per month for a dual fibre cross connection which for an out of band service is a significant saving, or $50 per month if you use single core.

That being said If you can get 3g/4g to work that saves you the cross connection charge all together....

Kindest Regards

James Braunegg

As long as your transit paths are completely different you should be all good. Telstra DSL is literally more reliable in the DC's than 3G though a Mikrotik DSL + 3G modem with RouterOS would be close to perfect.

Not true .... They all have their own issues.

For the most part, an ethernet cross-connect with a /32 is far simpler - as long as you pick a diverse upstream.

Also means you don't need any DSL router, authentication, copper, phone line costs, or DSL plan. 1Mb of bandwidth will get you enough to do emergency firmware downloads, email alerts, SSH/RDP/etc inbound. Ethernet is also unlikely to every have issues compared to DSL and 3G.

Just drop a DSL line in via a different carrier + static IP and you're set

This might not be particularly related to the request, but why don't DCs provide some sort of 'standard' OOB (for a price, or for free with X monthly spend, whatever)? Especially something like NextDC who are at the forefront of new thinking...

Or even an OOB company itself?

Or maybe I'm just ignorant :)

Hey all,

I have someone looking for a cross-connect with minimal transit (1mb) and a static IP for some out-of-band access.

They are in the main M1 hall, and not in one of the cages. If you can easily cross-connect and delivery a service like this cheaply, please drop me a line and I will forward it to the party needing it.
