Yeah you need to watch out for backpressure, it will kill emails even if you have low disk space on the windows root drive (not the mailstore drive).

Thanks for the replies - there are some true technical wizards out there..
The problem was due to the back pressure feature in our exchange cluster, specifically the edge transport service.
We disabled the monitoring, and communication was instantly restored between the Symantec cluster and our exchange environment.
Thanks to all for the very quick responses - we have happy Exec's now. (You'd think they'd enjoy the peace, but no..)  --Ed _______________________________________________
