[AusNOG] [off topic] AUSNOG's "Break Glass in Case of Emergency" :)

So, after lurking on the list for the last couple of years, this thread pops
up that prompts me to make a first post in the form of a shameless plug...
A significant portion of our business is supplying solutions for vending
involving integration with site access cards, etc. The two main applications
are dispensing of PPE at industrial / mining sites (using site access
cards), and ~3ish star hotels that want to give convenience of minibars
without the expense (vending machine on each floor using room access keys).
There is a little bit of irony in that last time I left EDC after installing
some equipment for the backend of our solution, I was wondering what other
applications there were for our tech - just after a prior visit I needed to
make a trip over to Jaycar for a couple of 15A IEC leads...
Anyways, hello to everyone on the list - it's been so long that it feels
like I know many of you very well.
...look out for a vending machine coming to a DC near you soon! ;)
Cheers,
-Kent

Vending Machine isn't such a crazy idea, especially those that take credit
cards... though I don't know how things like fiber sfp's would like being
dropped down a shoot XP
Though having the security guard sign out / in items isn't a bad idea, high
price tags are sure to ensure swift return of screw drivers!

The only people I'll willingly allow to stop me leaving somewhere are
police/prison guards and even then that might be questionable if I receive a
30 year government housing plan.
I prefer sign in/out and invoiced if not returned (eg $20 price on
screwdrivers encourages their return), else vending machine.

How about getting the burly security guard to lend it to you, and to not
allow you to leave until you sign it back in?

Could the tools be RFID tagged with sensors on all entry/exit points?
Given the computing power that is likely to be in the building, how about
just connecting the CCTV system to the cloud? You know how many of those
little snapie happie cameras can now do face recog? How about a FLOSS app
to do 'tool recog'?
So if some tech drops the tool in his kit by mistake (and I can see a simple
honest mistake like that happening), the system just pings the security
guard a quick IM and it gets recovered before exiting the building... no
harm no foul.
Technology investment to secure a $2 screw driver... $5b, value of first
AUNOG post with video clip of the guy getting searched for said driver...
priceless.
To much? :)
