Fairly sure you're right.  It used to jump onto the Google network locally
(as it still does), but it always terminated in the US.

As far as GeoIP goes, what matters is the IP address that the request comes
out from, which obviously isn't 8.8.8.8.  If you want to find out that
address, you can use :

$ dig +short dnsip.zsdemo.com @8.8.8.8
74.125.126.82

Whatever is returned for that hostname is the IP address that your DNS
queries are originating from.
