The beginning of the end has started.. Or the end of the beginning perhaps:


SEVEN construction companies have been selected to design blueprints for the first five mainland sites to be connected to the $43 billion national broadband network.

The firms are Bilfinger Berger Services, Downer EDI Engineering, Service Stream Communications, Transfield Services, Visionstream Australia, GHD and Silcar.

The first five sites -- in Brunswick in Melbourne, Townsville in Queensland, Minnamurra and Kiama Downs on the South Coast of NSW, Willunga in South Australia, and Armidale in NSW -- will each cover about 3000 premises.
