It's usually a pretty poor yardstick too. 

Sometimes you'll get a guy who has his masters in computing science, CCNP, VCP, every microsoft cert ever offered and yet he still can't tell you anything specific about the technologies involved. Other times a guy with no certificates can blow you away with how much he knows. 

If you're really serious about gaining employment be really serious about the technologies involved. Certificates just show that you're serious about getting a job. 

Oh and take the certificates off your resume if you ever apply for help desk. High school means you're overqualified for help desk usually.
