Subject: Re: [AusNOG] Test lab storage / racking
As some of you already have seen (Youtube) that I had a 42RU rack in my room,
I also had a 22 RU custom 1000mm deep rack that had its own really really loud cooling system.
My mother supported my enthusiasm for IT and let me run nuts with my dads credit cards on ebay buying stupid amounts of servers / switches / etc etc, to support it she had bill brower (our electrician) put a separate 20AMP feed into my room as well as some smoke detectors and different things... I am so thankful for their support.
I also had a small generator outside and built a failover high voltage relay switch that could be started from my computer using a USB to digi rail from Jaycar :)
In terms of moving equipment and what not I just bolted it in, had a few shelves and used to spend (wag) school some days like once every three months and just move it all around :P
Fun times, however I am yet to have a fire ;)
Cheers!

On the back of Seans emails, I have a home made *wooden* rack, about 15 RU, 700mm deep or so. :-)

What do people do for their lab gear?
While a standard rack with shelves might be nicest for labs with heavy
gear swapping that usually means just using the shelves.
And for home use there's often space issues with a rack.
My own home lab is very quickly expanding and needs something more then
a pile in a corner of my home office (fortunately my personal M40e has
now been sold, or this would be a *much* bigger problem).
