Actually, if you go back to The Times story http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/the_web/article6169488.ece
from which The Advertiser derived its story you will find it  
references "a report being compiled by Nemertes Research, a respected  
American think-tank, will warn that the web has reached a critical  
point and that even the recession has failed to stave off impending  
problems."

There is earlier stuff along these lines on the Nemertes site, but  
nothing quite so doom-laden. So I guess we will have to wait for  
Nemertes to pronounce on the future of the Internet (and pay $$$$ for  
its report)
