There are a few statements in there I find odd.
- "Immediate action to bring Tasmanian services into line" -- the only thing
not in line with the rest of the country unless I'm mistaken is the access
to mainland Australia for competitive carriers, something that Basslink will
hopefully resolve especially since they've already announced customers. How
is Telstra Bigpond's ADSL2+ coverage in Tasmania right now?...
- "ensure that the network supports the latest technologies, particularly
Internet Protocol
version 6 (IPv6)" -- why would a wholesale access network's support of any
particular layer 3 protocol be relevant? I hope they're planning to give us
all the layer 2 access we want....
Just because this is a fibre access network doesn't mean it's going to be
high performance. This could still end up just being a dirty 100M shared PON
loop - meaning that instead of congestion at the exchange level we're back
to the old Telstra Bigpond CDLP days where everyone had packet-loss from
their cable modems to the head-end.
I'm also wondering what this will do to the "business" services market who
make a decent amount of coin selling "business grade" 2-10M services...

For the information of ISOC-AU Members, today I issued a news release
welcoming the government's NBN announcement. Here are the first couple
of paragraphs. PDF is available for download from the address below.
ISOC-AU WELCOMES NBN APPROACH
The Internet Society of Australia today welcomed the approach of the
Australian Government to delivering broadband throughout Australia, as
reflected in the announcement on the National Broadband Network.
Australia needs urgent action to modernise the state of networks and
the regulatory regime to deliver effective competition at the wholesale
and retail levels, said Tony Hill, President of ISOC-AU. The
announcement of the Government's thoughtful approach to delivery of high
speed broadband promises to deliver new networks on a stable basis into
the future.
