[AusNOG] Cisco 887VA vs Cisco 867VAE

Cisco no longer publishes throughput testing for lower end CPE.

Suffice to say, 870, 887s, 867s (old ones) are not really up to the task
for fibre/high speed connections.

Anything with a 10/100 switchport module in them won't really be able to
push packets between the switch ports at line rate very well

However, the 'new' generation 800 series, in our in-house testing are
all pretty good.

Newer generation hardware, and getting rid of the shitty 10/100 switch
port modules has helped a lot.

Good for high speed:
897VA
*Throughput:* *56 byte packets (Mbit)* *Pps @ 56bytes* *1500 byte
packets (Mbit)* *Pps @ 1500 bytes*
Default (No ACL) 56.16 81600 741.63 79500
Default (With Standard ACL) 29.21 46700 430.58 46200
With NAT (No ACL) 26.18 41400 484.67 41800
With NAT (With Standard ACL) 18.57 29600 334.26 29100
With IP Inspect With NAT (No ACL) 16.72 26700 304.65 26400
With IP Inspect With NAT (With Standard ACL) 16.2 21100 242.98 20800

Rule of thumb:
Basically any 800 series router with a Gig port are the new generation
and are good.
Anything with a 10/100 switchport are OK, but not really up to the task
for Fibre

And, yes you can upgrade just the modem firmware for xDSL

Your Mileage may vary,

Cheers,
Mike
