"Cloud" is marketing jargon for "managed colo in the cheapest
datacentre you can find."

In my experience, clouds are mostly hot air, with varying quantities
of wet stuff :)

In terms of sustainability, it's easier to take advantage of
economies of scale when you locate lots of stuff in one place
at high density: It's more energy-efficient to run your
web server as a virtual host in a 30 kW blade chassis than it
is to run it on a PC in your comms room.

Whether that high-density hosting location is yours, or operated
by a colo provider branding it as a "cloud" probably doesn't
make a lot of difference.
