[AusNOG] Telstra outage?

+1 to running the exact same, even though mine are expansion cards on Raspberri Pi’s and if there is any drift at all or loss of GPS signal or sync I get PagerDuty alerts within a minute and the problem is very clear and obvious if other things start playing up BUT that’s why little guys exist and Telstra, well they’re having a very bad week and it’s going to cost tens of millions and rolled heads sadly.

Also I found a few Symmetricom SyncServer S300 for roughly $600, the irony and sadness of such an integral device being kept in the network with a known bug is unfortunate but it’s also possible due to lost knowledge after downsizing and retirements.

There is someone sitting somewhere who saw this happen and thought, I told them :(

Lessons to learn for everyone I think, like Optus’s, make sure everyone has a console cable ‘haha’.

I'm just a tiny hick from BFN, I run nine and have done for 20+ years.
I run multiple geographically diverse GPS-derived sources which I guess
are technically called stratum-1 but are they?

Anyway, I monitor all the times on all my boxes and alarm if ANY of them
drift more than a few milliseconds.

Do I need it? Almost certainly not.
So why do I do it that way? Well, "why not?".

I'm not pointing the bone at 'T', but it's not like it's a crippling cost
to maintain a "non-trivial" number of stratum 1 or trusted stratum 2 time
sources. </opinion>
