It is the misguided focus on too many too simple things from the regulator and Congress, without even understanding what a packet is, and enormous subsidies for things that don't matter, and great mis-understanding of the things that do, that bothers me the most. Anyway, for 14 years, I have been trying to get bufferbloat fixed, universally, and great progress is being made. I felt that with one political push like this, it might begin to turn the tide. Buffer bloat is just about jitter, and jitter mitigation is just better now. I am really not sure what world you live in. Certainly the problem has got much better since 2010, but nearly every network I ever explore still has vast amounts of it. The global south, every coffee shop, and every hotel I have been in, all have major issues here. I make a habit of testing the conference wifi and posting results at every talk. The apartment complex I am staying in this week has a completely saturated backhaul and oversubscribed wifi, with tremendous amounts of delay and packet loss, where more constructive packet loss would help. Google docs is nearly unusable most of the day... and so it goes. I do hope the solutions for bloat continue to roll out globally and we cross this chasm in the next few years. > I don?t think jitter needs to be part of public policy. Congress has mandated a report from the FCC every year about the state of the internet, which is what this attempt at a constructive policy change of focus was about. > > Tom -- :( My old R&D campus is up for sale: https://tinyurl.com/yurtlab Dave T?ht CSO, LibreQos From rhys at nexusone.com.au Thu Dec 7 15:55:53 2023 From: rhys at nexusone.com.au (Rhys Hanrahan) Date: Thu, 7 Dec 2023 04:55:53 +0000 Subject: [AusNOG] Courier insurance Message-ID: <4B9829F5-DE1D-4ECB-8F73-A73F3ABAA90D@nexusone.com.au> Hi All, Just wondering how people handle the situation of transit insurance for domestic shipping of high value equipment? Greetings Noggers, If I have to use airlines to move equipment, I check it in as oversized baggage. Unfortunately, insurance for accompanied luggage is not great (usually non-existent) for the reasons Jennifer has shown. Make sure equipment is boxed well. I?ve sat on the plane and watched baggage handlers throw boxes marked fragile onto the baggage cart. Carriers we?ve learned to avoid are TNT (damaged equipment), Couriers Please (late/failed pickups/late deliveries) and Parcel to Courier (damaged equipment). We?ve had good results with Aramex and Fedex. Look at TransDirect if you prefer a broker and multiple options. In November we had new HP equipment for deployment at SY4. I had it shipped to my home, tested a basic config, loaded it into my car and drove 850klms then unloaded at SY4 where it was installed and commissioned. IMHO, the best way to get equipment safely to the DC is via car. I had some gear shipped to me in QLD, and was bringing back to me in Vic for the following weekend. Saw it off at Brisbane all bagged and tagged. Then in Melbourne, virgin says ?we placed it on belt 2, we aren?t going responsible for you not picking it up?. Efforts to explain to the airline that no I didn?t pick it up, and that it never arrived on the belt the same as everything else. They literally just ignored me and left me high and dry. Police said they could not do anything as no indication it was stolen, airport refused to check cctv as police didn?t do report, and baggage services kept shirking responsibility. After lots of backward and forward, we just had to give up. The vendor on the other hand was very understanding and it cost me as per our agreement, which was money I didn?t want to burn but sadly, had no choice because I needed to keep to my agreement. Overall, don?t trust the airlines. If you check it, make sure it?s got an air tag or something to track it down. Jen Sent from my iPhone On 7 Dec 2023, at 23:14, Nathan Brookfield > wrote: ? Having said that, consider medical couriers as an option. These are people who are usually hand-picked from courier companies for premium work and have a greater sense of consequence with their work. There is usually some company servicing a regional hospital on scheduled runs in every major town. The guys who warehouse/deliver parts for Telstra and Nokia in Australia are also the same guys who haul blood and kidneys for hospitals. My personal story of tracking a missing router to the n-th degree found it with dual-wheel tyre tracks across the box - it's difficult for them to claim the waiver of liability when it's clearly one of their own vehicles that damaged it. I have heard of an expensive router chassis arriving with a forklift-tyne-sized hole through the box to the other side. Tips for airline transport: - Check the weight handling limit and try and stay under it - usually something like 30kg per item - Don't ship fully assembled routers, put the labelled line cards and PSU's back in original boxes, and wrap those boxes with excessive amounts of bubble wrap - If you have support contracts, validate that the vendor actually has the spares stocked near the destination for quick turnaround if something happens - Camera shops near you stock the "pelican" cases which are an ideal armour for 1-3 RU size payloads and make you look badass at the luggage carousel (allow time in your plan for pressure to equalise, these can be hard to open after being subjected to altitude) - Cisco 7200's were shipped so often back in the day that Cisco had a replacement box as an orderable part number John On Thu, 7 Dec 2023 at 22:31, Rhys Hanrahan wrote: > Hi All, > > > > Just wondering how people handle the situation of transit insurance for > domestic shipping of high value equipment? I transported a bike as oversized luggage on a return trip to QLD recently from Sydney. Hi All, Just wondering how people handle the situation of transit insurance for domestic shipping of high value equipment? I am looking at options for TNT?s transit warranty and 1) It?s pricey and will cost thousands to get a warranty 2) They max out coverage at $40K it seems. I suppose we might be able to work around that with multiple separate shipments. We?ve got new Cisco gear worth 70-90K that we are shipping to one of our offices for configuration, then from NSW to a customer?s site in far north QLD. I?m not really keen on just trusting the gear won?t be damaged, so I?m looking for safe options to courier the equipment ? I?m wondering if anyone is aware of good options for this sort of situation? We are also attending site so it?s possible that we could just check the boxes in as luggage, but I?m not sure if I trust baggable handlers any better. Typically we?d just ship directly to site, but we don?t really want to configure and test it entirely onsite as that has it?s own challenges in this case. Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks! Greetings Noggers, ? If I have to use airlines to move equipment, I check it in as oversized baggage. Unfortunately, insurance for accompanied luggage is not great (usually non-existent) for the reasons Jennifer has shown. Make sure equipment is boxed well. I?ve sat on the plane and watched baggage handlers throw boxes marked fragile onto the baggage cart. ? Carriers we?ve learned to avoid are TNT (damaged equipment), Couriers Please (late/failed pickups/late deliveries) and Parcel to Courier (damaged equipment). ? We?ve had good results with Aramex and Fedex. Look at TransDirect if you prefer a broker and multiple options. ? In November we had new HP equipment for deployment at SY4. I had it shipped to my home, tested a basic config, loaded it into my car and drove 850klms then unloaded at SY4 where it was installed and commissioned. ? We have done this before for our own internal equipment and it?s been OK, but I wouldn?t do it in this case. IMO even if I wasn?t as worried about the equipment, it can be quite a hassle, so easier just to ship it. To me right now the two front runners are: * Quotes from sensitive freight companies ? TSS and COPE are the two I?ve seen recommended. From some rough info about TSS it seems like they?d insure high value equipment without it costing and arm and a leg. * Quote from our existing business insurance company ? for a few day period to cover the courier trip. We?ve started the wheels on getting this quoted as well. But also: * To be honest, the idea of just having general transit cover for anything that leaves our offices is an attractive idea, as we already ship new PCs etc from our offices nearly every day. And as luck would have it, it seems like we just lost 1 of 2 Wifi Access points sent to the same site? Glad it wasn?t the expensive equipment. * Driving the gear to site is definitely a good option, but as Joe mentioned, in this case it?d be a massive trip and the cost per day for the customer for our time would outweigh even TNT?s insurance ? though waiting to see if they have someone who can make the trip! I managed to cause quite a flurry of activity ? I really appreciate it. Have been mulling over all the inputs and right now I feel like checking in as luggage is off the cards - most of the responses have been horror stories ? From: AusNOG > on behalf of Rhys Hanrahan > Date: Thursday, 7 December 2023 at 11:01 pm To: "ausnog at lists.ausnog.net" > Subject: [AusNOG] Courier insurance Hi All, Just wondering how people handle the situation of transit insurance for domestic shipping of high value equipment? Thanks! Message-ID: <5d81073a-47b9-4eed-9c4e-f5c511f7858c@tncrew.com.au> G'day folks, This year's been a long road of final ground-works for us, and I'm working to get a few more long-term nails bedded down before it's 2024. Eliminating Atlassian from our vendor stack is one of them. We left Jira a while back for GitHub Project/Issues (not ideal, but we're constantly refining it and do a lot on there already), though Confluence Cloud is simple, good looking, and as of very recently, somewhat stable (ie. less awful than it was long-term following the re-build) and has been our Docs go-to since day 1. I'd really like to shift this over to an open-source solution, and had been looking at Mkdocs over time though it's got that slightly rough open-source feeling to it, though brilliant, and recently stumbled upon a nice documentation site which was powered by Mkdocs-Material by Martin Donath & community. https://github.com/squidfunk/mkdocs-material Base of: https://www.mkdocs.org/ Python isn't our ideal; we're primarily PHP-driven at the moment while we keep evaluating a lower-level language to commit to fundamentally (Rust, Python, Ruby, Perl, etc). That's a slow-burn process for us, so at the moment Python would be a decent compromise - though PHP is our preference for a few reasons (namely for simplicity to internally deploy). Does anyone have experiences, check this, avoid that, sort of feedback that they're happy to share? We'd be incredibly grateful! Both of them can work with Github Actions to publish to a variety of places like s3 buckets or github pages if you want things to be accessible. There's also hugo and zola for static site generation but they're less focused on docs and more generic.
