CPEs can ask for it, if you don't supply it that should be okay.

DNS search lists exist so end-users can do something like type "mail", the
search domain is appended, to end up with mail.example.com.

For an ISP that doesn't really work, it's better to reject it as an invalid
domain name, since if a customer submits "mail" by itself, they probably
don't mean "mail.<ispdomain>.com.au."

You can supply "." if you want to provide an option answer in the interests
of pedantry and best end-user experience ;-)
