Dear Noggers,
I think you will find your whois is happy again.
Whilst whois.auda.org.au is the ‘official’ server, whois.audns.net.au is now functional again.

Thanks for the tip Shane. /etc/whois.conf didn't exist in my Ubuntu instance, however creating the file and adding the line as you suggested worked!
