As much as this removes a level of convenience that some customers have
been used to, it really makes more sense to use whoever provides your mail
services for mail relay, rather than expecting it as an add-on from your
ISP.
It's cleaner from a security perspective (SPF, etc), better for
auditing/compliance/reporting, easier to troubleshoot, and most likely
comes with a better SLA if its an external mail service (compared to an
ISP's free mail relay).
I assume the customer already either runs their own mail server or has
their mail provided by some 3rd party, have you looked at using that system
to relay mail?
