[AusNOG] Recommendations for a broadband router/wireless AP for SOHO environment

I don't know about MBE. Does it just look like an ethernet interface to
the router?

Because of off-grid power constraints I wanted to do Wi-FI and 4G in one
device. I took a cheap TP-Link router I had lying around with a USB
port and gigabit ethernet (an early model TL-WR1043ND), put openwrt on
it, and plugged in a USB 4GX dongle. It's light on CPU, and there's no
doubt better options in terms of power use, but it's basically capable
and it's what I had lying around. (If anyone knows of a really good low
power option I'm curious).

This is mostly to say that if you have the hardware interfaces, changing
firmware is likely to sort out any software limitations in your chosen
device.

When you get down to it, the 4GX dongle I use (ZTE-mf823) is really a
separate device anyway in that it's running linux and interfacing with
the router through a USB interface that looks like ethernet to the
router. People have figured out how to get into the dongle to add extra
features to the web interface.
