[AusNOG] Internet Transit Providers

I concur re: AAPT, not a fan at all and it's (imo) a sub-standard product to what you will get from Telstra or Vocus.

Do you have any sort of information/metrics around your (expected) traffic patterns, i.e. is a bulk of it coming from/going to specific ASN's or regions? Domestically the differentiation is small, Vocus has interconnectivity with Telstra and Optus but is missing AAPT, Telstra obviously has connectivity to AAPT. If you are sitting behind Telstra (AS1221) though you *might* get impacted by their peering spat with Cloudflare that is currently going on if that is a concern.

If international routing is of concern then I would go with Telstra as they (obviously) sit behind Telstra Global (AS4637). Telstra Global connectivity to the rest of the world, specifically Asia and Europe is (imo) significantly better than Vocus. In saying that though Telstra (domestic - AS1221) have had some very wonky routing to Singapore lately while SE-ME-WE-3 is offline, specifically routing traffic from Sydney -> Perth to hand off to Telstra Global who then route it Perth -> Sydney -> Hong Kong -> Singapore, and it seems impossible to get this resolved.

TLDR; if only concerned about domestic then either, price would likely be a driving factor. If concerned about international I would personally use Telstra.

Cheers,

Nik.

We've had Vocus a couple of years ago, went to AAPT for 12 months, and now are back with Vocus, due to a poor experience with AAPT. .

I wouldn't recommend AAPT, we had many many outages with them in the 12 months - more outages than 4 years of Vocus.

Hello everyone,

We are currently reviewing our internet transit setup as we are going to setup a rack in Sydney and I am looking for some recommendations regarding internet transit providers.

I am currently looking for 200M with bursting (been paying for 95th percentile over the 200M up to 400M) but I am also looking to have two links, one to Melbourne and one to Sydney data center as a backup/second breakout point.

I have been looking at Telstra, Vocus and AAPT so far and apart from price they all seem fairly comparable on the surface. Any comments?
