I'm always amused when people use this "thought it up in 30 minutes"
or "wrote it down on the back of a napkin" as some sort of slight on
the bigger idea.
The cleverness of UTF-8 is well known for being designed on the "back
of a napkin" over diner and famous scientific insights such as
evolution, gravity and the Archimedes Principle had their eureka
moments that purportedly lasted much less than 30 minutes. If I
mis-remember, the original network design of the "Internet" was drawn
up on a single scrap of paper.
All of us on this list know that the NBN "airplane" moment was
preceded by decades of wrassling a recalcitrant incumbent and a long
history of commercial disinterest in the access network. It was also
followed by years of political wrangling and detailed technical design
before being rolled out as a final product.
If anything, I am more suspicious of revolutionary change that lacks
an identifiable "eureka moment".
Mark.
