A geostationary satellite orbits at about 35,000km. That's a one way
trip from any terrestrial point to any other of at least 70Mm (Earth to
satellite, satellite back to Earth). A round trip is thus at least
140Mm. The speed of light is around 300Mm/s. Which means a latency of
around 0.45s (450ms) as your *best possible case*. You'll never see that
though - you have additional flight time between you and the base
station and between the other end and their base station, plus
processing time in routers and so on.
