And with the site blocking stuff starting off next week[1], the time to
contact the ALP about it is now (if one feels strongly enough) as they
have not announced a position on it (at the time of me writing this,
anyway).

The only hope now against Data Retention pretty much rests with courts
looking at overseas precedents. I can't recall precisely, but I seem to
believe that metadata access to the filter claimants will be available
at AG's whim. Every operator is about to need a DMCA type bod in their
org, and probably not just ISPs.
