My understanding was the likely result is for both sides to support this. The difficulty from what I see is that the voting public see this as a way to catch the nasty terrorist so the VOTERS will support it and following on means both parties will see it as political suicide to go against it.

Highly unlikely that they all will be.
I've met with my (ALP) MP, who seems convinced that the jury is still out and there's no party room consensus as yet. So calls and/or meetings with concerned constituents can still make a difference.
Get in touch with your MP if you haven't already.

Mine's LNP and sprouts the party line like all good sheep following the shepard, but he does have an understanding of concerns, and has been reminded he's in his job by us - for us, doubt it will change anything on the day though, time will tell.
