[AusNOG] First Turnbull, now Clinton

With revelations that both Turnbull and Clinton are taking calculated steps
to avoid scrutiny, the Brandis/Abbott case for increased surveillance
powers is looking increasingly wobbly.
It's hard to justify a $600M drain on national infrastructure if it's going
to be so easily circumvented by encryption/VPNs. Cameron in the UK
recognises that it's encryption that's the problem. Only I don't think
we're ready yet to start licensing the use of encryption.
It's sad that Brandis/Abbott have missed the point. The internet is going
dark for security agencies not because of insufficient powers to surveil
the internet, but because of the spread of encryption, a process which the
data retention bill will ironically enough exacerbate.
